Post-Surgical Rehab

One-on-one physical therapy to help you recover fully, safely, and on schedule after surgery.

What is post-surgical rehabilitation?

Surgery fixes the structural problem — the torn tendon, the worn-out joint, the compressed nerve. But it can't restore the strength, range of motion, and confidence that were lost before and during the procedure. That's the job of physical therapy.

Post-surgical rehab is a structured, progressive program that guides you from the first careful movements after surgery all the way back to the activities you had surgery to get back to. Done well, it protects the surgical repair, speeds recovery, and helps prevent the stiffness, weakness, and compensation patterns that lead to problems later.

Surgeries we commonly rehab:
  • Total knee and total hip replacement
  • Rotator cuff and shoulder repair
  • ACL, meniscus, and other knee surgeries
  • Spine surgery (discectomy, fusion, laminectomy)
  • Fracture repair and hardware removal
  • Ankle, foot, elbow, and wrist procedures

Don't see your surgery listed? Give us a call — we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit.

Why the first weeks matter so much

After surgery, your body is in a race between healing and stiffening. Scar tissue forms quickly, muscles that aren't used weaken within days, and pain makes it tempting to move as little as possible. The window for regaining full motion is real — and it's shorter than most people expect.

That's why your surgeon likely wants you to start physical therapy within days of your procedure, not weeks. A skilled therapist knows exactly how much to push and when: enough to keep you progressing, never so much that the repair is at risk.

What a good rehab program protects you from:
  • Permanent loss of range of motion
  • Weakness that lingers for months or years
  • Compensating with other joints and creating new problems
  • A slower, more painful return to work, driving, and daily life
  • Re-injury from returning to activity too early — or too late

How post-surgical rehab progresses

Every surgery and every surgeon has a specific protocol, and we follow yours precisely. But most recoveries move through the same broad phases:

Phase 1 — Protect and calm

Managing swelling and pain, protecting the repair, and beginning gentle motion within the limits your surgeon sets. Learning to move safely with crutches, a walker, a sling, or a brace if you need one.

Phase 2 — Restore motion

Progressively regaining full range of motion in the joint. This is where consistency pays off most — a little every day beats a lot once a week.

Phase 3 — Rebuild strength

Retraining the muscles that support the joint, restoring balance and coordination, and rebuilding the endurance to get through a full day.

Phase 4 — Return to life

Practicing the specific activities you want to get back to — stairs, gardening, golf, lifting grandkids, hiking — so you return to them with confidence, not fear.

Throughout, we communicate with your surgeon's office so everyone is working from the same plan.

Prehab: getting stronger before surgery

If your surgery is scheduled but not yet done, there's something worth knowing: patients who go into surgery stronger tend to come out of it faster. "Prehab" — a short course of physical therapy before your procedure — builds strength and mobility around the joint, teaches you the exercises you'll need afterward while you're still comfortable, and gets you set up with any equipment you'll need at home.
